How to Volunteer
Volunteers are essential to rescue and sanctuary work. If you can help consistently—even a little— you can make a big difference.
Hands-on help
- Sanctuary care support (feeding, cleaning, enrichment)
- Transport help (vet visits, pickups, drop-offs)
- Event support (set-up, staffing, tear-down)
Behind-the-scenes
- Donations and supply organization
- Outreach, sharing posts, community connections
- Admin tasks (as needed)
The Need
- Annual Shelter Intake: Approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. shelters annually, with 3.1 million dogs and 3.2 million cats.
- Adoption Rates: Around 4.1 million animals are adopted from shelters each year.
- Euthanasia Rates: Roughly 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized each year, comprising 390,000 dogs and 530,000 cats.
- Return to Owner (RTO) Rates: About 710,000 animals who enter shelters as strays are returned to their owners each year. However, RTO rates differ widely for dogs and cats, with around 70% of stray dogs returned but less than 5% of stray cats.
